It shrinks roughly one sixteenth of an inch for every ten feet of length as the mix water leaves, and that shrinkage has to go somewhere. Good concrete work does not prevent cracking, it controls where cracks happen by cutting joints that create a deliberate weak plane. How Should Control Joints Be Spaced?
The industry rule is that joint spacing in feet should not exceed 24 to 30 times the slab thickness in inches, which puts a four inch patio slab at 8 to 10 feet between joints and a five inch slab at 10 to 12. Panels should also be kept roughly square, with a length to width ratio under one and a half to one, because long narrow panels crack across the middle regardless of how well they were poured. Joints need to be cut to a depth of at least one quarter of the slab thickness, so a full inch on a four inch slab, and shallow decorative scoring does not count. Timing matters as much as geometry: saw cut joints go in within 6 to 12 hours of finishing in Orange County conditions, sooner in hot dry weather, using an early entry saw. Cut too late and the slab has already chosen its own crack locations.

How Thick Should a Patio Slab Be, and What Reinforcement?
Four inches is standard for a residential patio carrying foot traffic and furniture, over four to six inches of compacted Class II base. Five to six inches is appropriate where a vehicle might cross, where an outdoor kitchen island or a masonry fireplace will bear on the slab, or over expansive clay. Reinforcement does not prevent cracks, it holds the two sides of a crack together so the surface stays flush and load transfers across the joint. Welded wire mesh works if it is actually positioned in the middle third of the slab on chairs, and is worthless when it is laid on the subgrade and pulled up by hand mid pour, which is the industry norm and the reason many slabs behave as if they were unreinforced. We use either mesh on chairs or number three rebar on an 18 inch grid on chairs, and for structural areas supporting masonry we thicken and add rebar to the engineered detail.
What Mix, and How Does Curing Change the Outcome?
A residential exterior slab in Orange County should be a 3,000 to 4,000 PSI mix with a water to cement ratio kept low, and the single most damaging thing that happens on residential pours is adding water at the truck to make placement easier. Every gallon added past the design mix reduces strength, increases shrinkage and raises the chance of surface scaling. If workability is the issue, the answer is a plasticizer, not a hose. Curing is the other half. Concrete does not dry, it hydrates, and hydration needs moisture for days. Salt finish, made by broadcasting rock salt into the fresh surface and washing it out later, produces a subtle pitted texture common on Orange County pool decks. Exposed aggregate washes away the surface paste to reveal the stone, giving excellent traction and a durable surface that hides staining.
