How Is a Gas Fire Pit Burner Sized?

By the size of the burner opening and the fuel supply, and the two common approaches are a ring burner or a rectangular pan burner. A general guideline is that the burner should be roughly six to twelve inches smaller than the interior opening on each side, which leaves room for media and keeps flame away from the stone edge. BTU output follows: a 24 inch ring typically runs 60,000 to 90,000 BTU, a 36 inch ring 90,000 to 150,000, and larger linear burners more. That output has to be delivered, which means the gas line is sized for the burner load plus anything else on the branch, and it is common for a fire pit added to an existing outdoor kitchen line to push the total demand past what the existing pipe supports. Air mixers matter with propane, where the burner needs a mixing device to combust cleanly and avoid the sooty yellow flame that blackens stone and glass.

Why Does the Enclosure Need Ventilation?

Because gas that escapes inside a sealed masonry box has nowhere to go. Both fuels require enclosure ventilation, and the requirement is more urgent with propane, which is heavier than air and sinks to the bottom of a cavity where it can accumulate to an explosive concentration. Manufacturers of burner systems publish minimum free vent area, commonly expressed in square inches, and typically require vents on at least two opposing sides, low for propane and both low and high for natural gas. Vents are installed as stainless or brass louvers with insect screening so they stay open rather than being blocked by debris or a spider nest. The burner pan itself should also be drilled or fitted with drainage so rain that gets past the media does not fill the pan and sit in the burner ports, which is the most common cause of a fire pit that will not light after a wet week.

Which Fire Media Should Be Used?

Only media rated for the purpose, because ordinary rock traps moisture and can spall violently when heated. Lava rock is the traditional and least expensive choice, porous, forgiving, good at diffusing flame, and it dulls over time. Fire glass gives a modern jewel like look, comes in a wide color range, radiates heat well and stays clean, but it shows soot immediately if the burner is running rich and it costs several times more than lava rock. Ceramic logs give a wood fire appearance with gas convenience and suit rustic and traditional designs. Media depth matters: too much buried over the burner ports restricts gas flow and produces uneven flame, and manufacturers typically specify a maximum depth over the burner, usually a couple of inches. A layer of lava rock beneath a top dressing of glass is a practical compromise that reduces the glass volume required.

Where Can a Fire Pit Safely Go?

Not under a patio cover, not close to a structure, and not beneath tree canopy. As a practical minimum we place fire pits at least ten feet from any structure, fence or overhanging combustible material, and further where a wood burning pit is involved. A gas fire pit under a solid patio cover requires substantial vertical clearance and, in most cases, is simply not appropriate no matter how tempting the covered space is. Seating clearance is the other dimension: allow three feet from the outer edge of the fire pit to the front of seating so people can pass behind seated guests and so radiant heat is comfortable rather than punishing. Wind matters in Orange County: a fire pit in a wind exposed corner will blow out repeatedly, and a wind guard, a partial screen wall or simply relocating to a sheltered part of the yard is the fix.
