Loads spread through the interlocked units into a bedding layer and then into a compacted aggregate base, and the joints between pavers are structural: they transfer shear between units and are what makes the field behave as one surface instead of thousands of loose pieces. How Deep Does the Base Need to Be for Pavers?

For pedestrian patios over stable native soil, four to six inches of compacted Class II aggregate base is the working range, and six inches is what we use as a default in Orange County because so much of the county sits on expansive clay or on decades old tract fill of unknown quality. Driveways and any surface a vehicle will cross need eight to twelve inches. Excavation depth is the base thickness plus one inch of bedding plus the paver thickness, so a 60 millimeter paver on six inches of base means roughly nine and a half inches of excavation below the finished elevation. The base must be placed and compacted in lifts no thicker than three to four inches, with a plate compactor making multiple passes in perpendicular directions per lift. Base is also moisture conditioned, because bone dry crushed rock does not densify well and neither does saturated rock.

  • Six inches typical: Our Orange County default for pedestrian patios, increased to eight or more over poor soil or vehicle traffic.
  • Compact in lifts: Three to four inch lifts, multiple passes per lift, in alternating directions. Compaction does not reach deep from a single pass.
  • Base extends past the edge: Compacted base runs six to twelve inches beyond the paver field so edge restraint has something solid to anchor into.
  • Moisture conditioning: Base is lightly watered to optimum moisture before compaction, which is how crushed rock actually locks together.

Why Is the Bedding Layer Exactly One Inch?

Because bedding sand is a leveling course, not a base course, and thickness is what separates the two. One inch of screeded, uncompacted coarse concrete sand allows each paver to be set to a true plane and to seat under compaction, and it is thin enough that it cannot itself consolidate and cause differential settlement. When installers use two or three inches of sand to make up for a base that was not cut to grade properly, the sand compresses unevenly under traffic and the patio develops ripples and low spots within a couple of seasons. The sand is screeded with rails and never walked on before the pavers go down. Washed concrete sand is the correct product, not mason sand, which is too fine and holds too much water, and not stone dust, which locks up and traps moisture beneath the field.

What Does Edge Restraint Actually Do?

It keeps the outermost row from creeping outward, and since the field only works because units are locked against each other, losing the edge unlocks everything behind it. Without restraint, the perimeter pavers migrate a fraction of an inch per season, joints open, sand washes out, weeds establish, and the failure works inward. Options that we use, in rough order of cost: rigid plastic paver edging spiked into the compacted base with ten inch spikes, a concrete haunch or toe poured against the outer course and hidden below grade, a soldier course set in mortar, or a poured concrete curb or mow strip where the design calls for a visible border. Whichever is used, it must anchor into compacted base rather than into loose soil, which is why the base extends beyond the paver field. Edging spiked into soft dirt is decoration.

Polymeric Sand, and Should the Patio Be Sealed?

Polymeric sand is graded joint sand with a binder that activates with water and sets firm, and it does three useful things: it resists washout from rain and hose spray, it substantially reduces weed germination in the joints, and it discourages ants from excavating the bedding layer. It goes in after the field is compacted with a plate compactor over a protective pad, is swept and vibrated fully into the joints, and is then watered in exactly per the manufacturer instructions, because underwatering leaves it soft and overwatering floats the binder to the surface as a haze. Sealing is optional. A penetrating sealer deepens color, makes stains easier to remove and helps stabilize joints, and it needs reapplication every three to five years in Orange County sun. We generally recommend it for entertaining areas and near outdoor kitchens, and consider it unnecessary on secondary paths.

What moves the price

  • Paver type and format: Standard holland and rectangular units are the value choice. Tumbled, large format, slab style and porcelain units cost noticeably more per square foot.

  • Cutting and pattern complexity: Running bond in a rectangle cuts efficiently. Herringbone at 45 degrees, curved edges and circle kits generate far more saw time and waste.
