Solid Roof, Lattice or Louvered: What Is the Difference?
A solid roof cover blocks sun and rain completely, can be insulated, can carry recessed lighting and a fan, and creates a genuine outdoor room, at the cost of light into the rooms behind it. This is the real trade nobody mentions: a 14 foot deep solid cover across the back of a house measurably darkens the interior rooms behind the glass, which is why skylight panels or a partial lattice section are frequently the right compromise. A lattice or open rafter cover filters roughly 30 to 70 percent of sun depending on member size and spacing, keeps interiors bright, does not shed rain, and requires less structure because wind passes through it. Louvered aluminum systems with motorized blades give you both, opening for light and closing for rain, and they carry the highest cost, typically two to three times a comparable solid wood cover, plus a motor and controls that need service over time.
How Does a Patio Cover Attach to the House?
Never to the fascia board alone, which is the single most common defect we find on existing covers. A fascia is a trim board nailed to rafter tails and it was never designed to carry a roof. The correct attachment is a ledger through bolted into the house rafters, into a doubled top plate, or into blocking installed specifically for the purpose, with metal flashing integrated into the roofing above so water sheds over the connection instead of behind it. Where the cover meets an existing sloped roof, the tie in requires cutting into the roofing, installing proper step or apron flashing, and re roofing the affected area. Alternatively a freestanding cover set on its own posts just clear of the house avoids the attachment question entirely, which is often the smarter answer on a home with a low roof edge, a two story wall, or solar panels in the way.

How Are Patio Covers Engineered for Santa Ana Winds?
A roof plane in wind experiences uplift, and a patio cover is more vulnerable than a house roof because it has no walls to brace it and its underside is fully exposed to pressure. Design has three components.
