How is a niche waterproofed correctly?
The niche has to become part of a single continuous waterproof plane with the surrounding wall, not a separately waterproofed box stuck into a hole. With a sheet membrane system such as Schluter Kerdi, that means membrane wrapping into the niche from the wall surface with overlapped seams and pre-formed inside and outside corners at all eight junctions. With a foam board system such as Wedi, prefabricated niche units bond directly to the surrounding panels with the manufacturer sealant, producing the fewest seams of any method, which is why we favor them where the layout allows. With a liquid membrane, every inside corner needs reinforcing fabric embedded in the first coat, and the whole niche needs the specified wet-film thickness in two coats verified with a mil gauge. How should niche placement work with the tile layout?
A niche that lands mid-tile forces cuts around all four sides and looks like an afterthought. Planning the niche to align with grout lines means the opening edges fall on existing joints, so the surrounding field tile continues uninterrupted and the niche reads as intentional. That requires the tile layout to be established before framing, which is why we dry-lay the wall pattern during design rather than after the walls are closed.
