Why does a linear drain make curbless work?
A traditional center drain requires the floor to slope from all four perimeter edges toward one point, which means the entry edge also slopes down into the shower and produces an awkward transition at the doorway. A linear drain placed at the back wall or along one side lets the entire shower floor tilt in a single direction on one plane. That has three consequences. Water always moves away from the entry, so nothing runs out onto the bathroom floor. Large-format tile becomes possible on the shower floor, because a single-plane slope does not require the compound cuts a four-way slope forces. The transition at the entry can be made perfectly flush, since both floors share the same plane at that line. How is water kept from leaving a curbless shower?

Finally, a glass panel or a shower curtain positioned correctly, combined with a showerhead aimed at the back wall rather than the opening, keeps spray contained. Showers that get this wrong almost always got the slope direction or the waterproofing extent wrong, not the drain.
What makes a curbless shower genuinely roll-in capable?
Removing the curb is necessary but not sufficient. A roll-in shower for wheelchair use needs enough interior space to maneuver, generally at least 60 inches wide by 30 inches deep for a straight roll-in, with 36 by 36 inches being the minimum for a transfer-type shower where the user moves onto a seat. The entry opening has to be at least 36 inches clear, and the path from the bathroom door to the shower needs the same. Controls should be reachable from a seated position, mounted on the wall adjacent to the entry rather than under the showerhead so nobody has to roll through cold water.
