Custom tile design is the discipline of deciding what goes where before anything is bonded, and it is where a tile project stops being a surface and becomes architecture. A herringbone floor, a mitered stone inlay in an entry, a chevron feature wall that has to align with a fireplace opening, a mixed material shower that transitions from large format porcelain to a hand made mosaic at exactly the right height: all of these succeed or fail in the drawing stage. Once mortar goes on the wall, the layout is decided. We plan custom work on paper, prove it on the floor with a dry lay, and only then commit, because the cost of moving a pattern one inch after installation is the cost of the entire installation.

What Patterns Are We Actually Talking About?
The classical patterns each carry their own geometry, cutting demands and visual weight. A running bond offsets each row, and on tile over 15 inches it is limited to a 33 percent offset for lippage reasons, which produces a distinctly different rhythm from a 50 percent brick bond. Herringbone sets rectangular tiles at 90 degrees to each other in a zigzag, either straight or turned 45 degrees to the room, and every perimeter tile is a diagonal cut. Chevron looks similar at a glance but is fundamentally different: the tiles themselves are cut at an angle so the ends meet in a continuous point, which means either buying purpose made chevron tile or cutting every single piece. Basketweave alternates pairs of tiles in opposing directions, often with a small dot at the intersections. Versailles, sometimes called a French pattern, uses four different tile sizes in a repeating module and is traditional for travertine floors. Stacked or straight set is the most modern and the least forgiving, because a perfectly aligned grid exposes every variation in tile size and every degree the room is out of square.

How Do Shop Drawings and Mockups Prevent Expensive Mistakes?
For anything beyond a straight field, we produce a scaled drawing before ordering. The drawing carries the pattern module, the control lines, the position of every feature and inlay relative to fixed elements like a fireplace opening or a vanity centerline, the location of every movement joint, the tile count of each size, and the edge treatment at every termination. That document catches the problems that are invisible in a rendering: a border that lands two inches off center on the room axis, a pattern repeat that puts a cut sliver directly in the main sightline from the entry, a feature panel that collides with a shower valve. Then we dry lay. For a floor medallion or a patterned entry, we lay the actual tile on the actual floor without mortar, check it against the drawing and the room, and walk the client through it. For a feature wall, we lay the module out on the floor in the same orientation. This step costs a couple of hours and it is the cheapest insurance in the trade, because after the mortar cures the only correction available is demolition.
What Does a Waterjet or Mitered Inlay Involve?
An inlay is tile or stone set into a surrounding field so the two read as one continuous plane, and there are two ways to produce one. Waterjet cutting uses a computer controlled high pressure abrasive stream to cut precise shapes from stone or porcelain, which is how medallions, borders with interlocking curves and logo work are made. The pieces arrive as a numbered kit with a paper or mesh backing and a template, and installation is a matter of setting the template accurately in the field and holding the surrounding tile to it. The critical detail is thickness: the inlay material and the field tile are frequently different thicknesses, so the mortar bed under the thinner material has to be built up to bring both faces into the same plane, and that is judged tile by tile rather than assumed. Mitered inlays are cut on site with a rail saw, typically to create a border, a rug effect in an entry, or a picture frame around a feature. Both approaches demand that the field layout be set from the inlay outward, since the inlay is the fixed element everything else has to accommodate.
How Do You Combine Materials Without It Looking Accidental?
Mixed material work succeeds when the transitions are deliberate and fails when they are incidental. Three rules do most of the work. First, transitions should occur at an architectural line rather than in open field: at an inside corner, at the edge of a cabinet run, at the top of a wainscot, at a doorway. A material change floating in the middle of a wall reads as running out of tile. Second, thickness has to be resolved. A 3/8 inch porcelain field meeting a 5/16 inch glass mosaic leaves a 1/16 inch step that will catch light and fingernails, so we either build the thinner material up in the mortar bed or introduce a metal profile that absorbs the difference intentionally. Third, the grout has to be considered as a design element rather than a filler, because a mixed material design with three different joint widths and one grout color will read as a mistake. We usually specify a single grout color that works with every material in the design, and match the joint width where materials meet even when the field widths differ.
Why Does the Waste Factor Change So Much With Pattern?
Waste factor is the percentage of extra material ordered beyond the measured area, and it is driven almost entirely by how much of each tile ends up in the bucket rather than on the wall. A straight grid in a simple rectangular room wastes around 10 percent, mostly at the perimeter cuts. A diagonal layout wastes 15 percent because every perimeter tile is cut at 45 degrees and the offcut is rarely reusable. Herringbone and chevron run 15 to 20 percent for the same reason at a higher cut density. Versailles and other multi size patterns need the exact ratio of each size in the module plus a margin, so ordering by area alone produces a shortfall in one size and a surplus in another. Any pattern with a directional or matched face, such as a book matched stone or a wood look with a limited number of printed faces, needs extra to allow for selection. We also always order attic stock beyond the waste factor, because dye lots vary between production runs and a matching reorder in six months is unlikely. Ordering short is the most common and most damaging error in custom tile work.
