Custom millwork is architectural woodwork made for one house: wall paneling, coffered and beamed ceilings, stair parts, mantels, window seats, libraries and the trim details that make a room read as designed rather than assembled. It is not the same trade as cabinetry, though the two often meet. The defining constraint is that a house is never square, never plumb and never level, while millwork is milled to a thousandth of an inch. Everything good about a millwork installation comes from planning for that gap: shop drawings that anticipate it, scribe allowances built into the parts, and a site fitting process that closes the difference invisibly.

What Is the Difference Between Millwork and Cabinetry?
Cabinetry is boxes: modular, repeatable, usually built to standard dimensions and installed as units. Millwork is architecture in wood: it follows the building, wraps its irregularities, and is typically built as components that are assembled in place. A run of kitchen cabinets can be ordered from a catalog. A coffered ceiling in a room that is three quarters of an inch out of square across its length cannot, because every coffer has to be adjusted so the grid reads parallel to the walls the eye can see. The two overlap constantly, an island with furniture detailing or a library with integrated cabinets, and a good millwork package tells the cabinet shop where its work stops and the site built work begins. We draw that boundary explicitly, because it is where most trim jobs go wrong.
Why Do We Insist on Shop Drawings?
A shop drawing is a full scale plan of every piece, showing profile, joinery, grain direction, panel layout and the exact reveals between parts. It is where design intent becomes buildable, and it is where problems surface while they are still free to fix. Field measuring comes first: we measure the actual openings after drywall and before finish, in several places, because a wall that is 96 inches at the floor is often 95 and a half at the ceiling. Then we draw. The drawing shows where the panel stiles land relative to the window, whether a rail aligns with the door head, how the base and the panel bottom rail resolve, and where scribe strips absorb the out of square. You approve the drawing before anything is milled. On paneling and ceilings in particular, this step is what prevents a finished room where the panel grid is subtly off from the window it surrounds, which is the kind of error nobody can name but everyone feels.
- Field measure after drywall: Real dimensions taken in multiple places, because openings are never the same top and bottom.
- Full scale profiles: Every moulding profile drawn at size so the shadow lines are decided before a knife is ground.
- Reveals specified: The gap between parts is a design decision, not a tolerance. It gets a number on the drawing.
- Scribe allowance built in: Extra material at walls and ceilings so parts can be cut to fit the actual surface on site.
What Species and Materials Make Sense?
It depends on whether the work is painted or stained, and Orange County goes painted more often than not. For paint grade we use poplar for standing and running trim, and MDF for flat panels and applied moulding where stability matters more than workability, because MDF does not move seasonally and holds a paint finish with no grain telegraphing. Where paint grade work will take abuse, a stair skirt or a mudroom bench, we upgrade to poplar or hard maple. For stain grade the choice is aesthetic and structural at once: white oak, currently the dominant request, is stable and takes both modern light finishes and traditional ones; walnut is beautiful and expensive and shifts color with light exposure; alder is soft and dents; and rift sawn material costs considerably more than plain sawn but gives the straight consistent grain that makes a large panel read as one surface. On anything stain grade we sequence and match the veneer or lumber across a wall so the grain runs continuously rather than randomly.
How Does Millwork Get Fitted On Site?
Slowly, and with a scribe. The parts arrive slightly oversized where they meet a building surface. An installer holds a panel or a cap in position, sets it plumb and level to its own geometry rather than to the wall, then uses a compass or a scribing tool to trace the wall profile onto the workpiece and cuts to that line. The result is a piece that is true to itself and tight to a surface that is not true at all. Inside corners on tall paneling are coped rather than mitered where the profile allows, because a coped joint stays closed when the material moves and a mitered one opens. Long runs get scarf joints cut at an angle over a stud rather than butt joints. Nail holes are filled, sanded and, on stain grade, colored to match after the finish rather than before. On a coffered ceiling the whole grid is laid out with a laser and strings first, and adjusted until it looks parallel to the room, which is occasionally not the same as being parallel to the walls.

What moves the price
- Paint grade versus stain grade: Stain grade requires grain matching, higher material grades and far more careful joinery, often doubling the cost.
- Species and grade: Poplar and MDF are economical. Rift sawn white oak and walnut are several times the material cost.
- Profile complexity: Stock profiles are inexpensive. Custom knives ground for a one off profile carry a setup cost.
- Ceiling height and run length: Tall paneling needs more material, more joints and staging, and long runs need scarf joints and more scribing.
- Site conditions: Walls badly out of plumb or ceilings out of level increase scribing time significantly.

What is the difference between millwork and cabinetry?
Cabinetry is modular boxes built to standard sizes and installed as units. Millwork is architectural woodwork built for one specific house and fitted to its actual walls and ceilings. Paneling, coffered ceilings, stair parts and mantels are millwork. The two often meet, and the boundary belongs in the drawings.
Why does custom millwork take so long?
Most of the time is shop fabrication, typically three to eight weeks, plus two to three weeks for field measurement and shop drawings beforehand. Installation itself is often the shortest phase. Rushing the drawing stage is what produces work that does not fit, so we do not compress it.
Do I need shop drawings for a small project?
For a single mantel, sometimes a detailed sketch is enough. For paneling, ceilings or anything that has to align with existing windows and doors, shop drawings are worth every hour. They are where you catch a panel grid that does not line up with a window before it is milled rather than after.
Is paint grade or stain grade the better value?
Paint grade costs roughly half as much and looks excellent when built well, since MDF and poplar give a seamless painted surface. Stain grade costs more because it requires higher material grades, grain matching across a wall and much more exacting joinery. Choose by the look you want, not by durability.
Will the millwork move or crack over time?
Some seasonal movement is normal in solid wood, which is why joinery is designed to accommodate it: coped inside corners stay closed where mitered ones open, and panels float in their frames rather than being glued fast. Orange County's stable climate helps. Caulk lines at painted joints may need occasional touch up.
Can millwork hide lighting, speakers or HVAC?
Yes, and it is one of the best reasons to do it. Coffered ceilings can carry cove lighting, paneling can conceal speaker grilles and return air, and a built in can hide structure. All of it requires blocking and rough-in coordinated before drywall, so raise it during design rather than after.
