What is actually inside a quartz slab?
A quartz slab is a composite, not a quarried stone. Manufacturers grind natural quartz to a controlled particle range, blend it with pigment and roughly 7 percent unsaturated polyester resin, compact the mix under vacuum with high frequency vibration, then cure it in a kiln. Resin content matters more than most showrooms explain. It is what makes the surface non porous and stain resistant, and it is also why quartz carries a real heat ceiling. Brands sit in different tiers: Caesarstone and Silestone anchor the mainstream, Cambria runs a domestic premium line, and dozens of import lines fill the value end with thinner slabs and shorter warranties. Particle size drives appearance, since fine grinds produce the smooth marble look surfaces while coarse grinds read as a speckled aggregate.
Does quartz really never need sealing?
Correct, and that is the practical reason quartz dominates family kitchens. Absorption is effectively zero, well under the roughly 0.5 percent range where a stone starts drinking liquid, so wine, olive oil, turmeric, and coffee sit on the surface until wiped. There is no annual sealer, no water drop test, and no reapplication cost over the life of the counter. Daily care is warm water and dish soap. What quartz will not tolerate is aggressive chemistry: oven cleaner, paint stripper, drain openers, and high pH degreasers attack the resin and leave a dull patch that cannot be polished out the way a scratch in granite can. Bleach used repeatedly at full strength does the same thing over time. Keep those products off the counter and the finish stays as delivered.

- Use a trivet: Anything straight off a burner or a heating element needs a barrier, because the resin softens long before the quartz does.
- Cut on a board: Quartz will not scratch easily, but knives dull fast against it and darker colors show fine metal scuffing.
Where does quartz have real limits?
Two limits are worth understanding before you commit. Heat is the first. Resin begins to soften and discolor somewhere around 300 degrees Fahrenheit, so a pan straight off a burner or a slow cooker running for hours in one spot can leave a permanent white or yellow scorch. Trivets are not optional with quartz the way they are optional with granite. Ultraviolet exposure is the second. Standard indoor quartz can yellow over years of direct sun, which shows up in Irvine, Aliso Viejo, and Rancho Santa Margarita kitchens with large west facing windows and light colored slabs. If your counter sits in strong afternoon sun, ask for a UV stable line or move to a sintered surface. Neither limit is a reason to avoid quartz; both are reasons to place it thoughtfully.
Should you replace builder grade quartz?
Many newer Orange County homes already have quartz, and it is usually the builder base line: 2cm material on a plywood deck, a plain eased edge, and a low movement white or grey that reads flat next to a nicer backsplash. Replacing it is straightforward because demolition is clean, the cabinets are already level, and no mortar bed is involved. The upgrade that changes a kitchen most is not a different color but a different profile. Moving from 2cm on plywood to 3cm with a mitered 4cm apron, or adding a waterfall panel on the island end, changes the perceived weight of the entire room. How is quartz fabricated and shaped?
Fabrication happens on the same CNC waterjet and bridge saw equipment used for natural stone, with a few quartz specific steps. Inside corners on sink and cooktop cutouts are radiused rather than cut square, because a sharp corner concentrates stress. Mitered edges are cut at 45 degrees and glued with color matched adhesive so a 3cm slab reads as a 6cm or 8cm apron with no visible line across the face. Quartz can also be thermoformed, heated and bent over a mold, which is how curved waterfall returns and rounded bar fronts are produced. Can I put a hot pan directly on quartz?
No, always use a trivet. The resin binder softens near 300 degrees Fahrenheit, and a pan straight off a gas burner can leave a permanent scorch or a dull white ring that will not polish out. Granite and sintered surfaces tolerate direct heat; quartz does not. Slow cookers and air fryers need a mat too.
Will quartz yellow in a sunny kitchen?
Standard indoor quartz can yellow under years of direct ultraviolet exposure, most visibly on bright whites. It is a slow change rather than an overnight one, and it concentrates where sun hits the same strip daily through a large window. UV stable lines and sintered surfaces solve it. Window film is a cheaper partial fix.
Is quartz cheaper than granite?
They overlap almost entirely, so price is rarely the deciding factor. Entry level quartz and commercial grade granite both land in the fifties per square foot installed, while premium collections of either can pass one hundred forty. Quartz saves money over time by eliminating sealer purchases and the labor of resealing.
Can a chipped quartz edge be repaired?
Yes, small chips are repairable with color matched acrylic or epoxy filler, then sanded and polished flush. Edges and sink corners are the usual victims. Large breaks across a span are a different problem and often mean replacing that piece, which is why a chipped corner should be addressed early.
Will my quartz counter have visible seams?
Yes on any run longer than a slab, but quartz hides them better than natural stone does. Color consistency between slabs from the same lot means the two edges match, and tinted epoxy closes the joint to a hairline. We place seams behind sinks or at inside corners whenever the layout allows.
Is quartz safe for food preparation?
Yes. Most major quartz lines carry NSF certification for food contact, and the non porous surface gives bacteria nowhere to sit. You still should not cut directly on it, since knives will dull against a surface around 7 on the Mohs scale and can leave fine scuff marks on darker colors.
