Paneling is a family of systems, not a single product, and the one you choose sets the tone of the room. Horizontal shiplap and nickel gap read casual and coastal, and the shadow line between boards is the whole effect. Tongue and groove run vertically stretches a wall visually and suits an entry or a stair run. Full height board and batten is the most traditional option and the most forgiving, because the battens land on layout lines you control rather than on whatever the boards happen to do. Applied slat walls, meaning vertical wood slats bonded to a felt or MDF backer, read modern and add real sound absorption in a home office. Reeded and fluted panels are a tighter version of the same idea, usually in white oak or walnut veneer, and they work well behind a bed. Flat panel MDF grids sit in between: painted, architectural, and quiet. Reclaimed or character plank walls bring texture and color variation but demand more layout attention because the boards are rarely uniform in thickness. What Has to Happen to the Wall Before the First Board Goes Up?

When you add a half inch or three quarter inch of paneling over existing drywall, every outlet and switch box on that wall is now recessed behind the new finished surface. The National Electrical Code requires that boxes in walls with a noncombustible surface be flush with that surface or set back no more than one quarter inch, and that boxes in walls with a combustible surface, which includes wood paneling, be flush with the finished surface. The reason is straightforward: an arc or a loose connection inside a box needs to be contained by the box, not vented into a cavity behind a wood wall. The fix is a listed box extender or extension ring sized to the added thickness, with the device reset forward on longer screws so the yoke bears properly and the cover plate sits flat. On a wall carrying several receptacles, switches, a thermostat, or a low voltage plate, this is real work, and we price it as part of the job rather than discovering it on the last day.

Inside corners are usually butted with one side scribed, since caulk on an inside corner will crack before an out of square joint will. Finishing starts before installation. Solid wood gets primed on all six faces, which slows moisture exchange and keeps the back from cupping. Seams are either caulked for a monolithic painted look or left as deliberate reveals. On a textured or grooved surface, matte and eggshell sheens hide variation while satin emphasizes it. Spraying gives the most even film on slat and fluted panels; brush and roll is fine on flat stock. The walls that earn paneling most often are entries, stair walls, dining rooms, primary bedroom headboard walls, and home offices where acoustic slats do real work.
